Window cleaning: lifts and lift inspections

RecommendationVerified

Verify that lifting equipment is suitable for transporting people and that required inspections have been performed. Equipment designed only for loads is not a normal means of accessing windows.

Book IV, Title 4, of the Wellbeing Code regulates lifting. Using an apparatus designed for loads to lift people is only permitted in exceptional circumstances with risk analysis and corresponding regulatory measures.

Under articles 280 and 281 of the General Regulations recalled by the employment service, equipment meeting the regulatory definition of lifting apparatus must undergo inspection before first use then quarterly inspections by an external technical inspection service. Before site assignment, request applicable reports for the lift.
