Window cleaning: height work and rope work
The employer must justify access method choice by risk analysis. A window cleaner position on ropes requires rescue organization and appropriate training.
Book IV, Title 5, requires appropriate equipment and priority to collective protections. Articles IV.5-16 and IV.5-17 generally prohibit systematic or repetitive rope work. Exceptions require demonstrating that access by safer equipment is impossible or more risky, or that its implementation presents greater risks.
Article IV.5-18 notably requires two separately anchored ropes, a harness connected to a fall arrest device and specific training including rescue. No worker may intervene alone: another person must be able to alert quickly and know rescue procedures. A competent person designated by the employer supervises setup and work.
When recruiting, specify the techniques actually necessary and verify corresponding competencies. The last amendment mentioned in this title was published June 10, 2024.
