Truck drivers: driving, breaks and rest

RecommendationVerified

Construct the routes and schedules announced while respecting the driving limits and rest periods of regulation EC 561/2006. Driving time does not represent all working time.

The European sheet verified July 12, 2026 recalls the limits of 9 hours of driving per day, extensible to 10 hours twice per week, 56 hours per week and 90 hours over two consecutive weeks. After 4.5 hours of driving, plan for 45 minutes of break, possibly split into 15 then 30 minutes.

Normal daily rest is 11 hours; reduction to 9 hours is possible a maximum of three times between two weekly rest periods. Normal weekly rest of 45 hours must not be taken in the vehicle and the employer bears the cost of required accommodation.

Also plan loading, unloading and other tasks in the schedule. European working time rules set an average of 48 hours per week, distinct from the driving limit. International transport exemptions must be checked before promising a route organization.
