Tachograph: applicable requirements in 2026
Check the vehicle equipment and train the driver in its use. As of July 1, 2026, the obligation extends to certain international goods transport in light vehicles.
The Federal Mobility and Transport page, updated June 30, 2026, requires a smart tachograph version 2 for newly registered vehicles since August 21, 2023. For vehicles used in international transport, replacement of old analog or digital tachographs was required by January 1, 2025, and that of smart version 1 by August 18, 2025.
As of July 1, 2026, international goods transport in vehicles over 2.5 tonnes and up to 3.5 tonnes also fall under the scheme. The page recalls the exemption of article 3, point ha, of regulation 561/2006 for certain own-account transport when driving is not the main activity.
Qualify the activity before deciding on an exemption and verify that the driver is proficient with the installed tachograph. The Belgian derogation from the electric pilot project mentioned on the page ended August 31, 2026; do not present it as still applicable on September 30, 2026.
