Foreign worker: single permit and exemptions
Verify work and residence rights before setting the start date for a foreign candidate.
Since January 3, 2019, the single permit combines work and residence authorizations for the non-EU national working more than 90 days. The employer files through the single window; the Region examines the work and the Immigration Office the residence. Some cases, notably professional stays under 90 days and au pair arrangements, remain subject to other procedures.
Nationals of the EEA and Switzerland are exempt from work authorization, as also specified at https://www.belgium.be/fr/emploi/venir_travailler_en_belgique/permis_de_travail. For other candidates, examine the residence title and its labor market access: unlimited access may avoid a new authorization tied to the employer. Filing a request does not authorize work.
Prepare the residence documents requested by the Immigration Office: passport, proof of payment, resources, health insurance, medical certificate, and for adults, judicial record extract. Add professional documents required by the competent Region.
