Platform work: employment status and algorithms

RecommendationVerified

Directive 2024/2831 provides for a rebuttable presumption of an employment relationship and regulates algorithmic management. As of 30 September 2026, its transposition deadline is still ahead.

The Commission explains that Member States must make reclassification easier when the declared status does not match the work actually performed. Before offering assignments on a self-employed basis, examine how the platform organises the work in practice, particularly task allocation, pricing and oversight. The directive does not automatically turn all service providers into employees.

The text strengthens transparency about algorithms and the ability to challenge decisions affecting working conditions. It also provides for better traceability of platform work. The directive was published on 11 November 2024; transposition is required by 2 December 2026 at the latest, under Article 29. Distinguish these European requirements from Belgian rules already in force.
