Students outside EEA: residence and work limit

RecommendationVerified

The right to work depends on residence status. The 20-hour rule applies in all three regions for affected student residence permits.

The SPF distinguishes federal authorizations linked to residence from regional economic migration authorizations. Citizens of the EEA and Switzerland are authorized to work. For a third-country national admitted to reside as a student with a valid limited permit, check the residence document before hiring.

The Royal Decree of September 2, 2018 permits work during school holidays; outside holidays, work cannot exceed twenty hours per week and must remain compatible with studies. Do not confuse this limit with the annual social quota. Students admitted under European mobility programs are also covered under the residence conditions indicated on the page.
