Worksites: basic safety training and VCA
Verify basic safety training or equivalent proof before assignment to the worksite. A VCA certificate can establish required knowledge without replacing trade-specific training.
Since April 15, 2023, the federal rule applies to workers, self-employed individuals, and employers performing the work themselves. Training lasts at least eight hours and precedes the start of work; if prior organization is impossible, it must be completed within the month following the start of work.
Knowledge is presumed acquired with an equivalent training certificate, for example VCA, or at least five years of worksite experience in the last ten years. Keep supporting documentation. Stricter sectoral rules remain applicable, notably for temporary work.
The employer must always provide information about site risks before work begins and verify understanding. Basic training does not exempt from training on machinery operation or asbestos removal.
