Roofers: fall protection and scaffolding

Legal obligationVerified

Provide appropriate protections and training for work at height. A roofer’s experience does not exempt the employer from securing the worksite.

Articles IV.5-1 to IV.5-3 require selection of appropriate equipment after risk analysis. Prioritize collective fall protection, notably guardrails and platforms, over individual protection. Only perform work if weather permits safe work without compromising safety.

Article IV.5-4 limits the use of a ladder as a work position to low-risk situations where safer equipment is not justified, considering short duration or site characteristics. A ladder is therefore not the normal position for all roofing work.

For scaffolding, organize the designation of a competent person, checks, and training appropriate to use or assembly, disassembly, and modification. Verify these skills when recruiting. The PDF incorporates the amendment published June 10, 2024.
