Retail: opening hours 5 AM to 9 PM in 2026
The official page updated in August 2026 in principle authorizes retail stores to open from 5 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week. Separately check staff work rules.
The November 10, 2006 law was amended by the July 20, 2026 law. According to the current SPF Economy presentation, most stores can open from 5 AM to 9 PM and remain open seven days a week. The old general requirement for weekly store closure should no longer be cited as current rule.
Night stores typically follow a 6 PM to 7 AM window and may face municipal restrictions. Horeca is excluded from this opening-hours legislation. For mixed activity, the SPF indicates the entire business is excluded if Horeca activity reaches at least 40% of annual revenue. Public opening does not suffice to authorize paid Sunday work.
