Young workers: breaks and schedule limits

RecommendationVerified

Check young worker limits before assigning a minor to store closing or Horeca service. The schedule must also account for other employers.

The SPF sheet in principle sets a maximum of eight hours per day and forty hours per week, respecting 38 hours effective or average weekly duration. Time at multiple employers is added together. A 30-minute break is due if work exceeds 4.5 hours; beyond six hours, rest reaches in principle one hour.

Between two work days, provide at least 12 consecutive hours of rest. Work between 8 PM and 6 AM is in principle prohibited; exemptions must be verified for the activity and age. Even when an exemption permits Sunday, the young person in principle cannot work more than one Sunday in two without prior authorization from Labor Law Enforcement. Young people age 15 still subject to full-time schooling obligation are subject to specific additional conditions.
