Sunday work and staff rest

RecommendationVerified

Identify the exemption permitting Sunday work and provide compensatory rest. Staff rules differ from store opening.

The March 16, 1971 law in principle prohibits Sunday work, article 11. Its article 66 notably authorizes employment in hotels, restaurants, and bars. In retail, article 14 generally permits work from 8 AM to noon; full-day services require another exemption, notably those of the December 3, 1987 royal order.

Compensatory rest is in principle granted within the following six days. Per article 16, it lasts a full day if the service exceeds four hours and a half-day otherwise. Retail in recognized tourist centers can employ each worker up to 39 Sundays per calendar year, under article 14, section 2 conditions. Also check sector bonuses and minor-specific restrictions.
